Chris Quinn, was concerned that his #23 Sprint Car might not be competitive in the NWWT series, WELL, he certainly dispelled that question, as far as any of us in the NWWT go anyway . On Saturday Night, Sept.4th at Elma's - Grays Harbor Raceway, Mr.Quinn driving his #23 Sprint Car put on an exceptional exhibition of driving, I was particularly interested in watching him because of the afore mentioned concerns and he is a rookie in a Sprint this year, ( I am familiar with the car and was sure it would be competitive), he ran it Low, he ran it Hight, he just ran the wheels off that car, 7th Place overall and 3rd Place non-local driver, GREAT JOB, Chris and you took the bonus money home too !!!

Corbin’s hot streak continues, wins PHRA’s debut at Oregon Fair
Andrew Kunas

SALEM, Ore. – Henry Corbin III is suddenly the hottest dwarf car racer in the Pacific Northwest. On Sunday night, racing on a brand new race track, the Molalla, Ore. driver cruised to his third main event victory in as many outings as he took the checkered flag at the Oregon State Fair Flat Track.

The win, though it came in a special non-points race, was worth a solid $500 for the reigning PHRA Dwarf Car champion, who backed up his point race victories at Madras Speedway on August 21st and just on Saturday night at Cottage Grove Speedway. Sunday’s event took place on a newly constructed dirt oval, guessed to be roughly 1/8-mile in length, which no dwarf car had rolled on prior to Sunday. Corbin’s win came in front of several fairgoers who were watching the event as part of the annual Oregon State Fair in Salem.

Because the PHRA was the only class on hand for Sunday’s events and the Fair requested that the three hour window be filled up as much as possible, the PHRA decided to run four sets of heat races (twelve heat races in all) and points would be tallied to determine line-ups in the two semi-features that would each send six cars to the main event. Corbin ended up missing his second heat race, but thanks to a pair of heat race wins and a strong run in Semi-Feature 1, Corbin started the 40-lap feature inside the second row.

Corbin moved into second place on the initial start and soon went after his father and race pole-sitter Henry Corbin II for the lead. Concern grew for about three laps as heavy fumes, possibly from an oil leak, came out of his car as he went through each set of turns. The fumes soon quit, however, and Corbin continued on with missing a beat it appeared. It was on Lap 8 when he moved by Henry II to take the lead. Corbin III never got a big lead on his father, who stayed close the entire way, but Henry II was never able to significantly challenge Henry III.

For Corbin III, it was his fourth overall victory of the season. In addition to his two point race wins and Sunday’s non-points show in Salem, Corbin also won a race with the Southern Oregon Dwarf Car Association in June.

Corbin II, also from Molalla, held off Vancouver, Wash.’s Troy Kunas to take second. Kunas battled with Aloha, Ore.’s Ronnie Gilmore Jr. for a number of laps just past the midway point, with Gilmore holding the third position on Laps 22 and 23, but Kunas got back by Gilmore and ran third the rest of the way. Gilmore, who started ninth, would finish fourth over Hillsboro, Ore.’s Eric Bergquist.

Corbin II won Semi-Feature 1 after starting fourth, earning the pole position in the feature race. He held off his son for the win with Jim Fischer finishing third. Gary Sause of Molalla passed Kunas on the final lap to win Semi-Feature 2 and earn the outside front row starting position for the feature. Bergquist was third. It was the second time Sause passed Kunas on the final lap to win a race on Sunday, as Sause did the same thing in Heat 2C (sixth heat race).

Hillsboro’s Dave Cantu, the current PHRA points leader, was probably grateful Sunday’s special event was non-points. Cantu started on the pole of Semi-Feature 1 after winning three of his four heat races and accumulating the most points. However, Cantu spun out on the dry slick track exiting Turn 4 with seven laps complete and collected two other cars. Cantu restarted but eventually left the track due to front end suspension problems resulting from the crash. Cantu though was the only driver to pick up three checkered flags during the marathon of heat races earlier in the evening.

Corbin III, Gilmore and Mike Chadwick each scored two heat race wins. Berquist, Sause and Kunas each picked up single heat race victories as well. Cantu earned 38 points, with Chadwick taking 38 (Cantu earning tie-breaker with most wins). Gilmore was third in points with 37 and Kunas fourth with 34.
