*MERCED, California —* With the First Annual United Midwest Promoters (UMP) DIRTcar West Coast Nationals just a week away, Oval Motorsports, Inc.,...

MERCED, California — With the First Annual United Midwest Promoters (UMP) DIRTcar West Coast Nationals just a week away, Oval Motorsports, Inc., promoter John Soares announced today that all races at both tracks will be sanctioned by the national organization in 2011. The season’s premier modified event will take place at Antioch and Merced Speedways August 28 and 29.
“We want modified stock car racing to grow bigger and better in California,” Soares said. “UMP DIRTcar will award regional points at our tracks. Other California tracks will hopefully join the sanctioning group, and we can have a true regional championship for the West’s dirt racers. The point system will allow our drivers to compete on a national level if they choose.”
UMP DIRTcar has grown rapidly nationwide, and is looking for a stronger presence in California. The organization is looking to unify rules and increase modified car counts at the tracks it services.
“The rules and the point system will give us a level playing field with those on the other side of the Continental Divide,” Soares said. “And, there will be much benefit to the racers themselves.”
Soares, who comes from a storied California racing family, and who has raced internationally in his long career, researched sanctioning body rules and found UMP DIRTcar to offer the most for the modified division.
“The rules are more track-friendly, and are based on common sense,” he said. “They allow for quick-change rear ends, so cars can easily change gears when traveling from one size oval to another - that’s a huge savings. Aluminum heads is another - they offer savings in the long run.”
Modified drivers in the area have applauded UMP DIRTcar rules, saying that initial engine expense may be more than that of other sanctioning bodies, but the engines in the UMP DIRTcar racers last longer with the components allowed.
“Their (UMP DIRTcar) program is good for the drivers,” Soares continued. “They also offer bigger and better sponsors for points races, and there is the national spotlight.”
UMP DIRTcar is hoping for a three-track local circuit. Oval Motorsports, Inc.’s Antioch Speedway operates Saturday night, and Merced Speedway operates Sunday. Decades ago, racing took place on Friday, Saturday and Sunday in a close geographical area.
“The more (tracks) the better,” said UMP DIRTcar Director of Western Operations Chris Morgan. “Working together nationally with unified rules and points will trickle down to the regions and the local tracks - and, they will work better.”
Antioch and Merced Speedways have already seen the benefit. UMP DIRTcar standout Stormy Scott of New Mexico said he and several others from UMP DIRTcar tracks in El Paso, Texas and Las Cruces, New Mexico will be trailering up to California to earn points next week.
The West Coast Nationals is scheduled August 28 at Antioch Speedway and August 29 at Merced Speedway. Grandstands will open 4 p.m., and Soares will present his trademark “non-stop racing action” show with qualification races leading A, B, and C main events beginning at 5 p.m. Pits will open at 1 p.m.
